Ute Aurand’s 16-mm films about fleeting moments, places, encounters and landscapes were partially shot in her private surroundings and partially on trips and reveal her own unique poetic signature that sees the fragmentary as a quality. We are showing two of her films that were made while she was travelling. TO BE HERE was filmed in New England, New York City and the southwest of the USA and is the third part in her countries trilogy following India (2005) and Junge Kiefern (2011), which allow us to get involved in her discoveries, experiences and encounters with the help of handheld camerawork free to capture individual moments and rhythmically associative montage. TO BRASIL was made during a journey to Brazil. “Ute Aurand (…) shares with us the feeling that although the unceasing progress of time may bring losses with it, our lifetime is also enriched by tenderness, affection and complexity.” (Erika Balsom).
